Light Projections

This project consists of paintings made of light and music made from silence. The concept of painting with light first popped into my head when I was learning how to expose a silkscreen in May of 2020. I experimented with different types of lenses, projectors, and other ways to capture light, eventually discovering the relatively simple technique I used in this series. I used the lens of a magnifying glass to focus and project a room’s ambient light onto a wall. I captured this phenomenon on video with a DSLR camera and composed music to follow along with the video. The score/sound design is comprised of synthesizers created by sampling the ambient room tone in the video. The result is minimal, mysterious, and familiar in a way that feels like a memory or trying to slip back into a beautiful dream.
